Get Skilled

A committed street sweeper is paid about N40,000 a month, an average footballer in Europe earns over (£)50,000 pounds a week. With all the street sweepers commitment she earns peanuts because she's engaged in an unskilled labour, but a soccer career requires lot of skills.
This does not reduce the street sweeper in anyway; just that she has decided to give out a value that any other person can give. There is no school of street sweeping or have you heard of one? It is purely an unskilled profession that requires your hand and common sense. On the other hand being a world class footballer requires practice, training, concentration, it requires a world class coach and plenty of discipline.
A lot of young people are of the erroneous view that they are rewarded base on the hours they spend on the job. In as much as the time spent on the job is important, it's not as important as the skill you bring to the table. Your skills go a long way to determine how fast you solve a problem and get your portion of the job done.
It doesn't matter your job get skilled. Be a skilled teacher, you'll make better students. Be a skilled pastor, you'll make better congregation. Be a skilled leader and you'll make a better society.
To be skilled requires the willingness to learn. We all need a broad range of skill to contribute to a modern economy. The 21st century is riddled with people that don't have the basic skills to compete and win. The chief of all the skills we need to learn is the basic skill of learning.
Learning itself is a skill, it's a skill to we must master to become the best of what we are called to do. It entails a positive mental attitude, reading, listening, creative thinking and others.
In the work place some skills are necessary, skills like time management, leadership skills, interpersonal skills and others. However these skills may not be necessary if you're a carpenter. The basic skill for a carpenter is to know how to work with woods.
No matter what we do today, we need to learn new skills on how to carry out our given tasks. Learn something new today, don't stop your education by default, be proactive get skilled!
